After the beginning of puberty, in some cases, breast development does not occur normally, resulting in abnormal breast shapes, sizes and positions. In these cases, a significant alteration of self-esteem is generated in the patient and that can generate complexes and social avoidance in certain situations. In these cases, it is important to know how to recognize the problem and seek help, since they generally have a surgical solution that can provide a high quality of life for the patient.

Tuberous breasts are usually one of the most frequent malformations, but they also tend to go unnoticed, since the patient thinks that she only has a small and strange breast. There are milder forms and more marked forms with breasts completely different from each other. In these cases, what happens is that at the base of the breast there is an internal fibrous ring, which constricts the breast and prevents it from developing and expanding normally, generating a very narrow breast at the base and with a conical appearance, remembering a “tuber”, where the name tuberous breast is coming from. The breasts are also being widely separated at the neckline. Its correction consists of eliminating this fibrous ring and adding volume either with implants, with fatty tissue or with both.

Any patient who presents an anomaly in the development of the breast and generates an aesthetic discomfort which prevents her from relating in a normal way or generates problems of self-esteem and acceptance. It is important for parents to recognize this problem. It is one of the few breast surgeries, in which sometimes and if the case is extreme, the patient is intervened before the age of 18 to improve her quality of life.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and usually it lasts between two and four hours, depending on the complexity of the case. The patient is usually left overnight, although depending on the case, she could also leave the same afternoon.

Generally, the intervention consists of several phases:

  • Release of the internal fibrosis of the breast so that it expands. This can be done by a scar on the areola or in the groove, which will have previously been discussed in the consultation with the surgeon.
  • Volume increase: It can be done with the placement of a silicone implant through fatty tissue grafts or what is more common, a hybrid technique, in which we put silicone implants and correct all the residual differences in shape and size between both breasts with fatty tissue. We always try to put implants of the same size, so that the breasts evolve at the same time over time and we correct differences in size and shape, adjusting the patient’s tissues.
  • Breast lift and areolas reduction: the final phase in which we sit the patient and adjust the skin and areolas, to obtain a raised and symmetrical breast, with proportionate areolas.

We usually leave drains, which are removed the next morning. I have to clarify that the removal of the drain is not a painful process if it is done carefully and following a few tricks.

After being discharged, you can shower normally and do the cures at home, which are quite simple. You may feel some discomfort and inflammation, which will resolve during the first days and are well controlled with medication. You should wear the prescribed bra and band for the first four to six weeks.

The time to recover is usually two to three weeks, depending on the type of work activity you perform. To make efforts and drive, we usually recommend waiting for four weeks, after which you can start doing sports that do not involve the arms or the chest, for which you must wait three months.

The performance of this type of intervention must be performed by a plastic surgeon with experience in breast surgery. Dr. Ospina dedicates part of his surgical activity to breast reconstruction, which gives him a great understanding of the anatomy and shape of the breast.

This type of intervention must be performed in a hospital that meets all health requirements and has an intensive care unit. Cosmetic surgery is a very regulated surgery with fewer complications, but in case they appear, it is essential to have the support of a good hospital. Hence, low-cost surgeries try to save money on this and are performed in small clinics where these safety conditions are not covered.

Nowadays, the results of tuberous breast surgery have improved considerably thanks to the performance of the “hybrid technique”, avoiding after the surgery that the breast continues to appear with stigmata of the tuberosity. Dr. Ospina is an expert in the use of fatty tissue and complements his surgical technique with it to perfect the results.

“Our work philosophy in breast surgery is different, it is based on ethics and honesty, we like to explain to the patient all the advantages and disadvantages of the decisions made now, give her a natural and personalized result, but above all we choose a surgery based on science and modern techniques and implants, so that the result is lasting over time, avoiding future complications.”
