Blepharoplasty – Eye rejuvenation

DEFINITION

The periocular area has great relevance in the aesthetic of the face. The correct position of eyebrows, the eyelid groove, the absence of bags and furrows, as well as firm and full cheekbones, without signs associated with youth. Over the years, the involution of said tissues occurs, signs of aging appear such as drooping of the tail of the eyebrows, the appearance of excess skin on the eyelids, the bags protrude create an appearance of fatigue, the furrows deepen generating an appearance of ill health and finally the atrophy of fat in the cheekbone area and cheeks make the face look flabby and aged.

The classic blepharoplasty surgery seeks to rejuvenate the gaze, but also to regain a correct field of vision. In classical techniques, excess skin and fat bags are usually dried. But currently that is not enough, so I do a combination of techniques for my patients:

  • Upper blepharoplasty with fatty tissue filling in the eyelid groove when needed
  • Lower blepharoplasty that can be due to an external scar when the removal of a little skin is required, or inside the eyelid when only the fat bags have to be resected (transconjunctival blepharoplasty)
  • Canthopexy that consists of the elevation of the outer corner of the eye, to return to have the almond shape that is associated with a youthful look
  • Brow lift to open the gaze
  • Facial fatty tissue grafts, which brighten the face and give it a more attractive and healthy appearance.

INDICATIONS

Any patient who shows signs of aging in the periocular area and wants a comprehensive and long-lasting rejuvenation. Aesthetic medicine techniques cannot address all problems and are often temporary solutions.

PROCESS

The surgery can be performed under local anaesthetic when simple and short procedures are combined, or it can be performed under general anaesthetic when several procedures are to be combined and even with other facial rejuvenation techniques such as the cervicofacial lift.

PROFESSIONALS

This type of intervention must be performed by a plastic surgeon with experience in rhinoplasty surgery. Dr. Ospina has been trained in this surgery with several internationally renowned professors such as Dr. Artur Carbonell, Dr. Juan Carlos León and Dr. Gabriel Alvarado.

FACILITIES

This type of intervention must be carried out in a hospital that meets all health requirements including an intensive care unit. Cosmetic surgery is a very regulated surgery with few complications, but in the unlikely event that these cases arise, it is essential to have the support of a good hospital. Hence, low-cost surgeries save on this and are performed in small clinics where these safety conditions are not covered.

Dr. Ospina is fully aware of this and that is why he performs all his surgeries in the operating rooms of Hospitales San Roque, as he provides that extra security that he wants for his patients.

CARE

After surgery, the patient must perform basic care at home, such as cleaning the wounds and the use of various ointments. You will need to sleep on your back with the head of your bed raised for the first week. Applying ice to the area helps to quickly reduce inflammation.

RECOVERY

It only takes about 7 days to return to normal life, during which time the inflammation and bruising will have disappeared. Sports must be reintroduced progressively from the third week.

RESULTS

When the inflammation subsides and the small bruises on the skin disappear the results become apparent. Some are evident after a week and others take longer, such as fat grafts that require at least 3 weeks to stabilise.

COMPLICATIONS

Although rare, they are usually related to prolonged inflammatory processes or alterations in respiratory function that were not previously diagnosed or that were not correctly rectified during surgery, or that worsen after.

Appearance has a very important role in social interaction and in beauty, having a youthful appearance gives the face joviality, health and energy.
